President’s Report 2012

Welcome to the VEWSA 2012 AGM.  My report is an opportunity to reflect on the year that has passed and our achievements.  In August last year 3 of our players (Michael Deayton, Craig and Luke) attended the inaugural Powerchair Football workshop/championships. The players had the opportunity to learn new skills from some of the top players from all over the world including players from America, France and Japan.  Following on from the positive feedback of the sport we are now well into the process of introducing the sport to VEWSA.  We have been fortunate to receive a grant to purchase guards for Powerchair Football and most players have now been fitted for the guards.  Modifying the guards has been a huge undertaking with hours and hours of work involved.  A special thanks to Hans and Gary for giving up many hours of their free time to work on the guards.  As with all new things it has taken a little time to settle into the sport and learn the skills and rules.  Michael, Craig and Luke will be attending the Championships again in November where they will be able to build on their knowledge of the game for our benefit.  We wish them well.

The Victorian Pride Warriors were very successful at the NEWS event held in April, bringing home the coveted Roger Melnyk Award and the Hockey Trophy. Congratulations to the team, Andrew, Jamie, Luke, Jules, Michael Deayton, James and coach Hans for doing us proud.  Congratulations also to Andrew for achieving equal Overall Best and Fairest for the competition.   Our weekend in Albury was once again very enjoyable.  The weekend was well attended by both Victorian and NSW players and was a great opportunity to play plenty of sport and socialise.

As in previous years our challenge has been attracting players to VEWSA.  This is an issue that the committee is constantly working on as this is the key to the on-going success and viability of VEWSA.  We are also constantly working on applying for grants and ideas for fundraising or sponsorship.  We have been quite successful in obtaining grants for specific one off purposes such as equipment and we appreciate your support in our small fundraising efforts such as raffles and lunches.

Our committee and volunteers have been tremendously supportive in the overall running of the sports, helping out in tasks ranging from umpiring, scoring, making lunch, donating prizes for raffles, driving the bus and setting up equipment.  We can always use more help.  Being President has made me aware of the amount of hard work that goes on behind the scenes too.   On behalf of the players I would like to thank the committee and volunteers for all your contributions throughout the year. Your efforts do not go unnoticed and are greatly appreciated.

In closing I would like to thank the committee for supporting me in my role and I would like to wish everyone all the best for the rest of the season.
